A major fire broke out in a large warehouse here storing goods including electrical appliances which was put out today after a 12-hour operation and there was no report of any casualty.

The godown, spread over 10,000 square feet in New Washermenpet in North Chennai had a variety of products including electrical and electronic appliances, plastic goods, LED lighting, batteries and toys.

Late last night a fire broke out in the godown and it was put out after a 12-hour blaze fighting exercise involving a dozen fire tenders besides water tankers of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

"There was only one entry and exit point to the warehouse and it was surrounded by residential and commercial buildings on all other sides," District Officer (North Chennai), Fire and Rescue Services, K Kumar told PTI.

"Since the access was limited, the fire fighting took more time. Also, the storage had items like plastics. Dousing the blaze on such goods too takes more time," he added.

"No one was injured, the cause of fire is being probed by the police and the value of loss is being estimated now," he said replying to a question.
