Major cases of evasion of sales tax and value added tax (VAT) have been unearthed which runs into crores of rupees after a major drive was undertaken by the sales tax department here, it was stated today.
Palghar district rural police spokesperson Manoj Landge told PTI that an offence each has been registered against two traders in Tulinj and Nalasopara police station for tax evasion, he said.
He said that inspection carried out by Sales Tax officials revealed that one Siddhi Enterprises had evaded sales tax and VAT to the tune of Rs 73.68 lakh while Harshal Enterprises had evaded tax to the tune of Rs 40.02 lakh. The total tax evation has been estimated at Rs 1.13 crore, he said.
The evasion was for the period between 2008 and 2011 and the process of unearthing evasions in the district and Bhayander is on, after which the department is likely to unearth many more such evasions soon, he said.
