A major tragedy was averted by some alert villagers who stopped the Howrah bound Kamrup Express today after noticing that concrete sleepers were missing from the railway track near Jagiroad station in Morigaon district, railway sources said.

The 15,960 down Dibrugarh-Howrah Kamrup Express was halted by villagers at Tegheria near the Jagiroad station, sources said.

"The villagers noticed that some sleepers on the tracks were removed. They immediately stopped the train coming at that moment," an official said.

The incident took place in the morning and train services were halted for about three hours. After repairing the line, services resumed again.

Senior railway officials have rushed to the spot and ordered a departmental enquiry into the incident.
