In a letter to the Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas yesterday, Chouhan said the state was once again facing shortage of gunny bags for the current Kharif and ensuing Rabi procurement seasons, official sources said today.

"The state government had communicated its requirement (of gunny bags) to the Ministry well in time along with full payment of Rs 72.40 crore in July this year," the letter said.

Through a series of several meetings held in July, August and October, a programme was chalked out by the Ministry, according to which, 10,000 bales of jute bags are to be supplied in September, 30,000 bags in October and 36,000 in November 2012.

Besides, the state will also get 9,400 bales of High-density polyethylene (HDPE) bags.

The Chief Minister informed that about 80 per cent of the HDPE bales have been received, but the programme for supply of the bales of jute bags has not been adhered to.

The Chief Minister requested Thomas to direct all the authorities concerned to make available bales of jute bags as promised and ensure that all of these are delivered to the state in November itself, sources said. (More)
