"I will try my best. I am confident we will win. But if not, I will step down," Anwar said last night while taking part in a Google Hangout that was streamed live on YouTube.
Last month too Anwar said in an interview that he would end his 30-year political career and go back to teaching at the University if he lost the general polls which could be announced by Najib anytime now.
The last polls were held in August 2008 when the ruling Barisan Nasional retained power after winning by a slender margin.
The opposition alliance headed by Anwar swept several states. The polls have to be called by June 2013.
"If we don't get the mandate, then we should give space for the second-liners in leadership," he said during the one-hour question-and-answer event.
Anwar has faced several court cases in the last few years on various charges which he says are all trumped up cases to malign him.
