About 20 inmates of a correctional home in West Bengal's Malda district are currently on an indefinite fast demanding their immediate release.

According to Malda correctional home superintendent D Bhutia, 20 inmates have launched an indefinite fast inside the premises for the last three days demanding their release.

The inmates, who claimed to be innocent, were picked up by the police for their alleged links with the banned Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) and the Kamtapur Peoples Party (KPP) and lodged in the correctional home for nearly an year.

They are among the 55 persons currently lodged in the home for their alleged links with the KLO and KPP.

While Bhutia said there has been so far no response from the administration on the demands of the inmates, the district authorities and the police denied having any knowledge of the protest launched by the inmates.
