Maldives' ex-leader vows to prosecute opponents

The first democratically elected president of the Maldives, who was ousted from power last year, says he will prosecute those behind his removal if he is returned to office in Saturday's election.

Mohamed Nasheed said today that he will bring the "perpetrators of the coup" to justice.

Nasheed resigned in February 2012 after weeks of public protests against his order to the military to arrest and detain a senior judge. He lost support from the military and police.

Nasheed claimed that he was ousted at gunpoint, but a commission of inquiry dismissed that claim.

His election as president of this Indian Ocean archipelago in 2008 ended a 30-year autocracy.
