Male-female ratio improving in Goa: govt

The Goa government today said male- female ratio in the state is rising.

While 925 girls were born per thousand boys in 2009, it went down to 912 in 2010. But the situation improved in 2011 as 945 girls were born per thousand boys and in 2012, the figure rises to 940 girls per thousand boys, Women and Child Development minister Dilip Parulekar told the Legislative Assembly.

Directorate of Health Services is taking various steps, such as strict enforcement of pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques regulation act to prevent female infanticide and sex selection, he said.

"Proper monitoring and reporting of ultra-sonography conducted on pregnant women are also been done, apart from media campaigns on the issue," the minister said.
