A new born male child was found lying abandoned in bushes in Digashi village near Ganeshpuri area in the district, police said today.

The infant was found late last evening, Assistant Police Inspector G K Matondkar of Ganeshpuri police station said.

Officials said the child was half buried. Since dogs were barking in the area, passers-by went to the spot and heard him crying, following which they informed police.

A police team rushed to the spot and rescued the child, weighing around 2 kilo grams. He is admitted to a government hospital in Bhiwandi and his condition is stated to be normal, he said.

A case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) has been registered in this connection against unidentified persons, he said, adding investigations are underway.

Efforts are on to trace the persons who abandoned the infant, police said.
