Banerjee said 13 model schools, seven hostels, six polytechnic institutes, a law college and a multi-speciality hospital would be set up in the district and several hospitals would be upgraded.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with district officers in which top level bureaucrats and several ministers were present, she also announced to begin a Rs 41 crore water supply project for Englishbazar municipality, to establish a Rs 40 crore Silk Park and an Information Technology hub.

Stating that the district has ample scope for small scale industrial units, the chief minister said work was on to tackle the erosion problem of the Ganga.

A bridge would be built to link the Bhutni 'char' and Manikchak and three municipalities would be formed in Chachol, Gajol and Kaliachak, she said here on the second day of her tour to five districts.

Banerjee started her district tour with Nadia and Murshidabad yesterday and will visit North and South Dinajpur districts. The region is a Congress bastion that has sent six Congress MPs to the Lok Sabha.

This visit to the districts is seen in Congress circles as an attempt to wean way voters from the Congress ahead of the panchayat polls slated for early next year.
