Following her husband's illness, she contested from Raigunj, the constituency represented by P R Dasmunsi in 2009, and was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha.

This is for the first time that she has been given a ministerial berth with the portfolio of Minister of State for Urban Development.

With her induction in the government, Congress has sent out a clear signal of taking the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal head on.

An articulate speaker, 52-year-old Deepa is a post- graduate in dramatics. She became an MLA for the first time in 2006 by winning the Goalpokhar seat in West Bengal.

Daughter of Benoy Ghosh and Durga Ghosh, she got married to P R Dasmunsi in 1994.

A member of the Parliamentary Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice Social and Cultural Activities, she works for uplift of street children and disabled kids.
