Mamata directs to prepare vision document for WB edu sector

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today directed to prepare a vision document for education sector of the state for the next 5-10 years.

Banerjee reviewed the performance of state Higher and Primary Education Departments and asked Education Minister Partha Chatterjee to prepare a vision document for the next 5-10 years.

During the review meeting in which joint secretaries of the Education Department were present, the Chief Minister asked them to lay stress on quality of education, use technology and improve teaching methodology.

Later, Chatterjee said the rate of admission to graduate-level courses has increased to 17.5 per cent.

"The rate of admission was 11 per cent earlier and now it has increased to 17.5 per cent. The national average is 21 per cent and we want to achieve that," he said.
 

Overall there has been an increase of four lakh graduates and 36,000 engineering students in the state, Chatterjee said adding, both students and seats have increased in higher education and Madhyamik level.

The event was graced by Mr. Venkatesh Parathasarathy, CEO and MD, Food World Supermarkets Ltd. And Mr. Dinesh H.S. India Lead, Global Talent Enablement, HP Enterprise,who shared insights with the alumni on 'Personal Branding' and 'Importance of Learning Agility in Evolving Workplace', respectively.

Delivering the key note speech, Mr. Venkatesh emphasised on the significance of personal branding. "Building personal credibility is the first step towards building a strong personal brand.

The key attributes for building a strong brand include integrity, consistency and compassion," he said, besides applauding the students for going beyond limits and successfully completing their SMU-DE courses.

Addressing the alumni, Mr. Dinesh H.S. Spoke about the challenges of rapidly changing workplace scenarios and how continuous learning helps in facing them. Mr. Dinesh said, "The situation in the job market has become more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. With the evolution of technology, skill sets are becoming redundant; hence learning agility and adaptability is the mantra for success. It is important to learn from experience and co-evolve, by going beyond one's comfort zone."

SMU-DE commenced programs in Distance Education in 2001 and over the years has earned the status of a leading distance education provider of the country, with over five lakh students graduating in its wide variety of programs. It currently offers UGC approved industry-oriented programs in the streams of management and Information Technology.
