West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conferred her State's prestigious 'Vishes Sangeet Mahasamman' award on eminent playback singer Manna Dey at his residence here today.
Banerjee flew into the city to bestow the honour as the ailing 94-year-old singer was not in a position to attend the state-sponsored Sangeet Mela, beginning in Kolkata April 6, because of his ill health.
A fan of Dey, she also enquired about his health, sources said.
Born on May 1, 1919, Prabodh Chandra Dey went on to become popular as Manna Dey.
