Accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of curbing democratic rights of the people, CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat today alleged that a competition is on between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and her to "surpass each other as a dictator".

"West Bengal Government under TMC and Mamata Banerjee has curbed the democratic rights of the masses. The police in Bengal are acting as volunteers of TMC. A competition between Mamata Banerjee and Narendra Modi is on to surpass each other as a dictator," Brinda told reporters here.

She condemned Banerjee's comment yesterday that it would take 'only a minute for TMC to teach Left a lesson but her party did not believe in violence'.

"The language used by the chief minister is condemnable. She will get the message on September two during the strike by the Left trade unions," Brinda added.
