West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today cautioned against any attempt to drive a wedge between the people of the hills and the plains in North Bengal and appealed to political parties to help maintain peace in Darjeeling.

"My government will not tolerate any bid to create trouble in the Darjeeling hills and it is my sincere endeavour to see both the hills and plains smiling," the chief minister told a rally here in Jalpaiguri district.

Without naming the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha or any other party, Banerjee said, "I ask all to refrain from provocative action that may strain relations between the people of the hills and the plains.

"I want to see a smile on everyone's face," Banerjee said, referring to development projects being implemented in the Darjeeling hills and the Dooars and Terai in the plains of North Bengal.

"I will not allow anyone to play with fire in the hills at the cost of peace," she said.
