West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee this evening paid a sudden visit to her ailing predecessor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at his two-room government apartment at Palm Avenue in the city.

Banerjee spoke to the 73-year-old Communist leader and inquired about his health. She also spoke to his wife Meeera.

Bhattacharjee has not been keeping well for quite some time now.

Today was Banerjee's second visit to the Bhattacharjee home since last October, when the former chief minister had fallen ill.

"I have come here to meet him (Bhattacharjee) and inquire about his health. He is undergoing a treatment for his eyes. Otherwise he is absolutely okay. I have spoken to his wife too. It feels nice to meet them," Banerjee said after coming out of Bhattarcharjee's home.

Bhattacharjee, who was known for his chain smoking habits, has been suffering from respiratory problems for several years. Doctors have prescribed that he stay indoors.

Incidentally, repair work was carried out at his government flat last month after Banerjee had intervened on receiving information that it was in a bad shape due to lack of proper maintenance.
