Police say the bodies of two small children and a man believed to be their father have been retrieved from a car that may have been deliberately driven off a pier in southern Australia.

South Australia state police said that witnesses reported seeing a car speeding down a wharf in the city of Port Lincoln early today morning before it appeared to deliberately drive off the end of the pier.

The white station wagon quickly sank in 30 meters (100 feet) of water.

Police divers found the bodies of the man and children inside the submerged car about six hours later.

Detective Superintendent Paul Yeomans says police do not believe it was an accident.

Officials have not released the victims' identities.
