A man who was on the run after allegedly killing a person following a dispute over grazing land in Kathua district, was arrested while fleeing the state, a police official said.

Surmo, who belongs to a nomadic community, was absconding since Tuesday after he reportedly hit 55-year-old Ramesh Kumar with a log on the head, killing him, at Ban village in Chan Arorian area, the official said.

The killing sparked tension as hundreds of people took to streets and blocked the Jammu-Panthankot highway for several hours, demanding stern action against the accused.

A search party nabbed him in Rajbagh police station area while he was trying to slip into nearby Punjab last night, the officer said.

He said he was arrested on the charge of murder and is being questioned.
