A jewellery shop employee was arrested from his hideout in Kalyani in Nadia district, almost two months after he escaped with a gold bar from the shop located in the south Kolkata, police said today.

Liton Mondal (32) was arrested late last night from his hideout at a guest house in Kalyani for allegedly stealing a gold bar weighing around 697 grams with an estimated value of Rs 18 lakh in August, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

Mondal, who was working at the jewellery shop in south Kolkata's Muchipara area for more than 2.5 years, had been on the run since the day he committed the theft, the officer said.

"He remained untraced and our officers had a tough time finding his location in different places northern India. But he frequently kept changing his hideouts thus making it quite difficult for us to track him," the officer said.

Finally, acting on a tip-off that the accused, a resident of Nimta in North 24 Parganas, has returned to the state, police conducted a raid at a guest house at Kalyani and nabbed him last night, he said.

Police recovered about 400 gms of the bar from him. The accused was remanded to police custody till November 1.
