The court let off Khem Chand, a resident of Mangol Puri in north west Delhi, observing that there was no evidence to show that he had ever treated his wife with cruelty over dowry and he was also not present in the house when she was found with burn injuries in 2008.

"....There is nothing on record to show that the deceased (woman) was ever treated with cruelty for the demand of dowry. Except the bald statement of parents of deceased which too are hearsay, there is nothing in evidence to show that deceased had any quarrel with the accused (Chand) before the incident," Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Raj Paul Singh Teji said.

Chand was facing trial following allegations that he had harassed his wife Anita for dowry and in June 2008, he thrashed her badly, forcing her to commit suicide.

The police said that Anita was found with 100 per cent burn injuries in her house and was declared brought dead by the doctors when she was rushed to a nearby hospital.

During the trial, Anita's mother told the court that Chand used to harass and beat her daughter and on the day of the incident, Anita had called her and had told that her husband was beating her since morning.

She further told the court that Chand was having "illicit relations" with another woman and when her daughter used to object to it, he used to beat her. (More)
