Man arrested for allegedly strangulating wife

A 38-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangulating his wife to death after she refused him money to buy liquor at Sitaleswar locality in Odisha's Jajpur, a police officer said today.

The deceased has been identified as Kuni Haiburu (34), a mother of four girl children, he added.

Gangadhar Gaipei, a daily wager has been staying in Sitaleswar area with his family. He is an alcoholic and used to go to market in evening everyday to consume liquor. Unable to bear his torture anymore, Kuni declined to provide him money for liquor on Friday evening, the officer said.

"Gangadhar used to often demand money for liquor and had arguments with his wife over the issue. He used to beat up his wife at home in inebriated condition every night. On Friday evening Gangadhar demanded money from his wife to buy liquor. When she refused to give her husband money, he strangulated her to death," said Kamal Lochan Bhuinyan, Inspector-In-Charge of Jajpur town police station.
 

Hearing commotion, locals rushed to the spot and detained the accused. On being informed, local police reached the village and arrested the accused, the officer said.

Police seized the body and sent it to the district headquarters hospital for postmortem. The accused was forwarded to the court yesterday and remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected, the officer added.
