The Thane police have arrested a couple in a case of sexual harassment, rape and extortion.

While the husband, who the police said is a former 'shakha pramukh' (head of local unit) of the Shiv Sena, is accused of raping and sexually harassing a woman, the wife is accused of trying to extort money from her.

Vishwas Y Gore and his wife Shobha, residents of Goteghar in Shahapur tehsil, were arrested by the Kalwa police here yesterday.

A 28-year-old woman, a government employee working in Kalwa area of Thane, had lodged a complaint that Gore had been harassing her since May 2015, demanding sexual favours.

He threatened that if she didn't oblige, he would kill her husband and children and make sure that she lost her job, the complaint said.

Gore allegedly sent messages seeking sexual favours on her mobile phone.

At one point, he forced her to go to a lodge in Thane with him where he raped her and also took her pictures, she said.

Shobha, his wife, allegedly sent these pictures to the woman from her mobile phone, and threatened to send them further to the woman's husband if she didn't shell out Rs five lakh.

Further probe is on.
