Press Trust of India Mumbai
Police today arrested a man for selling beef after raiding his shop in south Mumbai.

The accused, Mohammad Akram Yasin Qureshi (56), was selling the meat from a small house at BDD Chawl, stated the FIR.

This is probably the first arrest in the megapolis after the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act came into effect in the state in March this year.

The controversial law bans slaughter of cows, bulls and bullocks and also consumption and possession of their meat.

Activists of organisations working for the protection of cow informed the Worli police today morning about the sale of beef in the area, following which police conducted a raid.

"We have seized the meat and sent it to veterinary doctors to ascertain whether it is beef," said senior inspector Vinay Kulkarni.

A police official said the accused maintained that he had bought the meat from Deonar slaughter-house in the morning, and even had a receipt.
