An alleged bag lifter who stole check-in baggage at the IGI airport here has been arrested by police from Punjab, a senior police officer said today.

A complaint about stealing of a check-in baggage from Lucknow-Delhi flight was reported by Air India security to the police on June 7. An FIR was registered and investigation was launched.

Examining CCTV footage, the cops narrowed down to three suspected passengers who had travelled in Jet Airways flight from Amritsar to Delhi on May 11 and had linked domestic flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad. Their backward movements were further analysed.

The investigators zeroed in on one passenger identified as Punjab resident Jasbir Singh,34, who carried no check-in baggage when he arrived at Delhi from Amritsar, said Dinesh Kumar Gupta, DCP IGI airport.

Further investigation revealed that he had picked up check in baggage from conveyor belt and changed into a handbag while heading for Ahmedabad flight.

He returned from Ahmedabad on May 13 with the same stolen empty bag at IGI Airport but did not claim his baggage which was lying at the luggage conveyor belt.

Also, he stole another check-in baggage of Paris-Delhi Air India flight and caught the Amritsar flight, the officer said.

Jasbir who was arrested from Punjab claimed to be a government servant. He "admitted" stealing the luggage of other passengers to splurge on his girlfriends.
