A man, who was allegedly attacked by some persons over a land dispute in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir last month, succumbed to his injuries in a Ludhiana hospital, triggering protests by Gujjars, who blocked the Jammu-Pathankote Highway today.

Mubarak Ali was attacked by a sharp-edged weapon at Chak Sajan area of Kathua district on May 17, following which he was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana, where he died last night, police said.

Ali's body was brought back to his native place triggering protests by Gujjar community members against the state government and police for failing to arrest the culprits.

The protesters blocked the highway demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack on Ali.

Senior police and civil administration officers rushed to the spot and controlled the situation after promising the protesters to setup a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.

Following an assurance by the authorities, the agitating Gujjars dispersed from the spot and lifted the blockade.

Tension had erupted between two sections who staked claim on a disputed piece of land in the village, which was "illegally" occupied by Gujjars, officials said.
