Suspecting a man of being a cow thief, a village head and three other persons allegedly thrashed him to death in Pachpedwa village.

Sajid, a resident of Bargadwa village, had gone to neighbouring Manoharapur village last night where some people accused him of being involved in theft of cows, District Magistrate Mukesh Chandra said.

They started assaulting Sajid, and to save himself he entered into the house of village head Ram Sagar.

The DM said that it was being alleged that the village head also assaulted Sajid, who died later at police station.

On getting the news, people of Sajid's village reached Pachpedwa village demanding that an FIR be registered against the village head and other accused.

Later, SP Vishambhar Dayal Shukla reached the spot and directed the police to register an FIR and arrest the accused.

The SP said that in the wake of tension heavy police force has been deployed in the area.

The DM said that a case has been lodged against four persons, including the village head, and efforts were being made to arrest them.

Meanwhile, Sajid's family members said that they would not carry out the last rites of Sajid until the accused were arrested.
