A man was today beaten up by the locals and subsequently arrested by the police for attempting to rape a four-year-old girl here.

The incident occurred at the Ampadav area, where the accused and the victim, along with her parents, lived in separate rooms of a building on rent, the police said.

The accused, Riyazuddin, a native of Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly lured the girl to his room under some pretext and tried to rape her, Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Uttam Singh Jimmiwal said.

However, he did not succeed in his design as the mother of the girl came into the room looking for her daughter.

As she raised an alarm, the locals caught hold of the man and roughed him up, the SHO said.

The matter was reported to the police, who arrived at the spot and arrested the man, he said, adding that a case was registered against the accused under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The girl was sent for a medical examination, the SHO said.
