A man was today booked for allegedly duping a person of Rs 46 lakh on the pretext of getting his NRI relative released from jail, police said.
Harminder Singh Saini was booked under Section 420 (cheating) of IPC and Sections 8,9 of Prevention of Corruption Act after a complaint by Gurmukh Singh.
According to the complaint, Singh alleged that his UK-based NRI cousin Tarwinder Singh Tally, is currently lodged in Modern jail in Kapurthala on charges of murder.

He said that Saini took Rs 46 lakh from him one and a half years ago for arranging the release of Tally by contacting some influential official.
He claimed that the amount was given to Saini in presence of Harbans Singh, the Sarpanch of Tut Kalan village.
When Saini could not get Tally released from jail, he returned Rs 20 lakh out of the total, but did not return the remaining amount.
Rather, Saini gave them four bank cheques out of which three had bounced, the complainant claimed.
An inquiry was conducted in this connection after which a case was filed against Saini, police said.
