A man has been booked for allegedly trying to damage the statue of B R Ambedkar in Sunderpur village in Jind district, police said today.

The FIR has been lodged against Ramesh and some other unidentified persons for attempting to bring down Ambedkar's statue, police said.

The complainants Sunil Kumar and other members of Bhimrao Ambedkar Sewa committee had commissioned the construction of a building and placed a statue of the legendary Dalit leader at the premises on December 6.

Yesterday, senior committee members Angrez Singh, Dilbaagh Singh along with one Sonu were overseeing the construction work, when the accused got into a verbal duel with them. When the matter got worse, Ramesh started attacking the walls of the building.

He threatened the committee members and refused to complete the construction work.

To settle the matter, Ramesh's family was called in. But around midnight, a committee member Dilbaagh heard the sound of something breaking, police said.

When he rushed out, he saw Ramesh and other unidentified persons trying to bring down the statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar.

After he raised an alarm, all of them fled. An investigation is underway.
