Man carrying Rs 39 lakh unaccounted cash arrested by police

Police Tuesday arrested a man from the city's central area after Rs 39 lakh unaccounted cash was seized from his possession, a senior officer said.

On a tip-off a joint team of Kolkata Police Special Special Task Force (STF) and police from Hare Street Police Station intercepted Sajan Sharma (56) in the city's Tea Board area Tuesday evening and seized the money from his possession, he said.

"The money seems to be an amount meant for illegal transaction through hawala. We are speaking to him and trying to find out where from he got this money and where to he was carrying them. He could not account for the money which was recovered from him," the investigating officer said.

 

Initial probe revealed that Sharma was a resident of Brindaban Basak Street in the Jorabagan Police Station, he added.

Sharma was booked under relevant sections of the the CRPC and the IPC and case was lodged at the Hare Street Police Station.
