One person was charred to death in a fire that broke out at a powerloom unit located at Maru compound in Bhiwandi town in the district today, fire brigade officials said.

The powerloom unit was completely gutted in the blaze that broke out around 1 pm, Datta Salvi, chief fire officer of Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) said.

"Charred body of a man, identified as one Khan and aged around 45, was recovered from the gutted unit. The body was sent to a hospital for post-mortem. It was not immediately known if the deceased was a worker from the unit or not," he said.

The blaze started around 1 pm, following which three fire engines and water tankers were deployed to douse the flames. The operation went on for three hours, Salvi said.

According to the officer, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. "As per the eyewitnesses, it started around the electrical wires, hence it could be due to short circuit," he said.

Other factories located next to the powerloom unit were not affected, the officer said.
