Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Suresh Chand Rajan asked Ramesh Kumar to report to the South West Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Traffic) in the morning for five days for assisting police at busy traffic signals.
"The DCP will depute him to assist the traffic police officials on duty at any busy traffic red light under his jurisdiction in managing or diverting traffic from 10 am to 5 pm for five days," the court said, adding that he will report to DCP traffic from August 9 morning.
Modifying the jail sentence, the sessions court said as Kumar has no criminal history and is the only bread earner in his family, it would meet the ends of justice if he is given an opportunity to mend himself and learn the norms of civic society.
Kumar came to the sessions court seeking leniency after a magisterial court on June 19 sentenced him to 20 days in jail with a fine of Rs 2,000 for driving his car under influence of liquor at Dwarka road here.
Seeking leniency, Kumar's counsel told the ASJ that he was not aware of the consequences of pleading guilty.
The counsel further argued that Kumar has two minor kids and ailing mother to look after, so he be released on three days jail term already undergone by him.
