A man, who killed his wife by strangulating her, has been convicted by a Delhi court which observed that "despite atrocities, females are preached to be tolerant to the excess" and questioned "whether family members were not equally responsible for the death."

However, the court is yet to pronounce the quantum of sentence to the convict.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Savita Rao, while holding the accused Azim Khan guilty, said "despite his conduct having been cruelsome, uncaring and full of atrocities towards his wife and that on previous occasions also he had tried to give poisonous substance to her, he was requested (by the woman's parents) to take her back which probably had motivated him further to continue with his wicked intentions."

"Divorce is still a stigma and reconciliation is sought by majority of parents. Despite atrocities, females are preached to be tolerant to the excess and adopt to the situation," the ASJ said.

Noting that these cases are reflective of the "wicked reality" and "lesser respect to the daughters and woman folk", the judge asked "whether her family members were not equally responsible for the death of the woman who was forced to join her matrimonial home again and again."

"All the circumstances unerringly pointing towards the accused being perpetrator of crime. I have no hesitation to conclude with respect to guilt of the accused in commission of murder of his wife, who is accordingly convicted for the offence under section 302 (murder) of IPC," the court said.
