A 50-year-old man died after being assaulted by a GRP constable at Baharampur rail station in Murshidabad district today.

Dilip Ghosh was assaulted by constable Paritosh Biswas when he was waiting at the station with his wife late last night, GRP sources said today.

The couple were on their way back home to Bongaon in North 24 Parganas from Tarapith, a pilgrim spot in Birbhum district. As it was late in the night, they decided to wait at the railway station.

The constable confronted them, questioning their relationship and a heated argument followed during which Ghosh was assaulted, sources said.

As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed by the people present at the station to a nearby hospital where he died.

His wife in a complaint lodged with the police said the station master did not respond to her appeals for help.

GRP sources said Biswas was later arrested and then suspended.

High rail officers have rushed to the spot.
