Man dies after bus hits his scooter, drags him along

A 56-year-old man died when a state-run bus jumped traffic signal, hit the scooter he was riding and dragged him several metres at Hastings crossing in southern parts of the city.

Subhrangshu Sarkar, an employee of a private shipping company, was hit from behind by the CSTC bus coming from Princep Ghat. When he fell from the scooter, the bus did not stop and continued to move dragging him along, police said.

Following the incident, the bus driver was caught by a mob, beaten up and then handed over to police, they said.

The mob also tried to break window panes of the bus and set it on fire, but timely intervention by the police brought the situation under control.
