Man dies during treatment in police custody, probe ordered

A 45-year-old man, who was arrested last week in connection with an assault case, died during treatment at a hospital here, following which a probe was ordered in the case today, police said.

Wanted for allegedly assaulting a Dalit woman, Saroj Senapati alias Akuli was apprehended from a hideout after a scuffle on Friday night, the police said.

Akuli, hailing from Malisahi village under Narasinghpur area, sustained head injuries during the scuffle after he had bitten a policeman.

He was taken to the local primary health centre from where he was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday morning. He died there last night, police said.
 

Akuli's relatives alleged that he died due to police excesses and in-charge Superintendent of Police, Cuttack Rural, Madhav Charan Sahu, ordered a probe into his death.

The inquiry will be conducted by a DSP-rank officer, police said.

Meanwhile, a mob led by family members of Akuli staged a road blockade at Narasinghpur demanding compensation and "exemplary punishment" to the "erring policemen".
