A 25-year-old man, who was arrested in a burglary case at Sikandrabad town, died in police custody today.

Wahid was beaten up by the public after he was caught stealing at a temple and was handed over to the police this morning, SP(City) Praveen Ranjan Singh said.

The accused was brought to the police station. By the afternoon, his condition started to deteriorate. He died on the way to the district hospital, Singh said.

The police also said six cases had been registered against Wahid in the past.

However, family members of the deceased rejected the charges and called it a custodial death.

The victim's mother Shanno said her son had gone outside to purchase vegetables and had not committed any crime.
