Two police constables were today placed under suspension after a man, who was picked up in connection with a petty fight, died in police custody in Balrampur district of the state.

Ashok Kumar Kashyap, the victim, was picked up by two constables -- Shyam Prakash Yadav and Deepak Malik -- from Nai Bazar area yesterday, Home department officials said today.

Kashyap, who was heavily drunk, was taken ill while in custody and was rushed to Pachpevda community health centre, where he died during treatment yesterday, they said.

However, later, on the complaint of his wife, an FIR was registered against the duo.

The constables had been placed under suspension, the officials said, adding that excessive consumption of liquor appeared to be the cause of death.
