One person got drowned in the Kosi river after jumping from a boat near the bank in Chausa block of Madhepura district today.

Chausa BDO Sabrul Haque said Riyaz Khan (38) of Phulaut Purvi village was crossing the river, which is in spate right now, in a boat which was nearing the bank.

"Seeing the boat approach the bank, Khan jumped from the boat perhaps thinking he would reach the bank faster by wading, but the current was so fast that he got swept away immediately," said Haque.

Khan had left his village to visit his agricultural lands on the other side of the river, the BDO said adding the body has been recovered and was being sent for postmortem.
