A man has been duped of Rs 45,000 by an unidentified person after he allegedly diverted his attention while depositing cash at a south Delhi bank saying some of the currency notes were fake, police said today.
According to police, the incident took place on Thursday morning when the victim, Amit Bhuneshwar Pathak, had gone to Corporation Bank in Mahipalpur of South Delhi to deposit money.
"He claimed that he had gone to deposit Rs 1.58 lakh at the bank. In his complaint, Pathak said while he was filling up the form at the bank's counter, a person pointed that some of the currency notes were fake. Falling into the trap, Pathak asked the person, who was not known to him, to have a look at the notes," police said.
Subsequently, when he went to deposit the sum, he was told that amount was less than it was mentioned in the bank form, they added.
Pathak, knowing that he had been cheated, called his friends, and asked the bank to show the CCTV footage.
"While the footage contained the incident, but the face of the man was not clearly visible," the victim had said in his complaint.
A case has been registered and efforts were on to identify and nab the culprit, police said.
