Man fined Rs 75,000 for divorcing his wife by triple talaq

A community panchayat today slapped a fine of Rs 75,000 on a man for divorcing his wife by uttering talaq thrice in Madala village here today.

The panchayat also directed Hussain to give Rs 14,000 as 'mehr' and Rs 5,000 for the inconvenience caused to the woman by Friday.

The Turk community among the Muslims held a panchayat in the village and fined Mohammad Hussain (30) for divorcing his wife Begum Shamin (27) during Ramazan.

Shahid Hussain, the coordinator of the Turk community panchayat, said his community was trying to end this "wrong practice" of triple talaq and had asked its members not to disrespect women and to treat them on a par with men.
 

The Turks are a Muslim community who mostly live in the Terai region of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
