A 20-year-old university student was today guilty of planting a bag of explosives on a busy tube in the UK last year.

Damon Smith was caught on CCTV dumping a bag containing a home-made bomb and deadly ball-bearing shrapnel on a Jubilee train with a detonator clock timed to go off 13 minutes later.

Passengers reported the bag to the driver. The bomb did not explode.

Smith's mother claimed that her son is suffering from Asperger's syndrome and did not understand what he was doing.

A jury at the Old Bailey was shown footage of Smith's tube journey on October 20 last year, the report said.

Former altar boy Smith built the device at his home with a 2 pound clock after googling an al-Qaeda article entitled 'Make A Bomb In The Kitchen Of Your Mom'.

Smith, who faces several years in jail, will be sentenced on May 26.
