Angry locals in Salempur village today vandalised a police jeep and beat up a cop in protest against the mysterious death of a 30-year-old man, whose body was found hanging from a tree.

SHO of Salempur police station Puttan Lal received minor injuries in the incident, police said.

Unrest prevailed in the area this morning as Chotu, a driver was found hanging from a tree outside the village.

While police described it as a case of suicide, locals claimed he was murdered.

According to SP (Rural) Ashok Kumar Shukla, Chotu used to carry sugarcane to mills. Last Friday, his trolley rammed into a 10-year-old girl in Pahasu village, injuring her.

Chotu had agreed to pay Rs 10,000 to the girl's relatives for treatment but did not pay the amount.

Locals allege it was an act of revenge by the girl's family and demanded that an FIR be registered, he said.

Agitated villagers were then pacified by the police as it lodged an FIR under section 302 of the IPC against one Aashu and Pramod, relatives of the injured girl.
