: In what is considered a major security lapse, a 30-year-old man was found hanging near the golden tower of the famous Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple here today.

No one is allowed near the tower without personal authorisation of the Temple Executive Officer, who is in the rank of Joint Commissioner, police said and wondered how the man managed to reach the spot and hang himself.

An enquiry was being held on the security lapses in the area, they added.

Meanwhile, the man who hanged himself near the golden

tower has been identified as Chandrasekharan from Thanjavur, a worker engaged to carry out repairs at the 'Nayakan Mandapam', temple officials said.

He had gained entry into the area by slipping through the railings and hanged himself from a rod, they said adding the man had tattooed the name 'Stephen' on his body.
