A man guilty of mowing down two persons by driving a water tanker negligently has been sentenced to two years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by a court here which observed that the punishment should act as a deterrence.

According to the prosecution, Karan Singh had fatally hit Sanjeev and Devender by his rash driving here in 2007.

The court handed down the jail term to Karan Singh for the offences of causing death by negligence and rash driving under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

"It is a well known fact that road accidents are on an increase. In this case, it has been established that the accused was driving his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and thereby he caused death of Sanjeev and Devender.

"Road traffic accidents pose serious threat. It is also a well settled principle of law that award of punishment must be commensurate to the commission of offence and it should be such so as to create deterrence in the minds of public at large," Metropolitan Magistrate Sushant Changotra said.

The court also directed the man to pay a compensation of Rs 30,000 each to the families of both the victims.

However, Singh moved an application after which he was granted bail to allow him to appeal against his conviction.

The court also considered a police report which said the families of the victims have received Rs 5.5 lakh each as compensation.

They were taken to a hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead, it said.

During the proceedings, the accused had denied the allegations and claimed he was falsely implicated.
