Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat convicted city resident Sukh Charan on charges of trespassing into the house and making the robbery bid, observing that incidents of robbery are at a "sharp rise" in the national capital.

"The court cannot turn a blind eye to the sharp rise in the incidents of robbery in Delhi. Such offenders need to be dealt with sternly in order to send a strong message to the society at large that such offences do not attract any leniency at all," said the judge, while also imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 on the convict.

Charan was arrested in August last year on the complaint of a Birla Sunlife Insurance Ltd's employee Tanu Srivastava that the accused had entered her house in West Delhi and had tried to commit robbery.

According to the prosecution, Charan entered Srivastava's house, where his wife used to work as a maid, without her permission and caught hold of her by neck.

He then demanded a sum of Rs two lakh and threatened to kill her if she did not give the amount, the prosecution said.

It added she promised to give him the money to save her life and somehow managed to get rid of his clutches and raised an alarm, following which her mother rushed to her aid while Charan fled the scene. He was later arrested by police.

The court rejected the defence counsel's plea that he was the only bread earner in the family and they would starve if he is jailed.
