Additional Sessions Judge Yashwant Kumar awarded the jail term to Delhi resident Rizaul after convicting him for causing hurt while committing robbery, an offence covered by section 394 of the Indian Penal Code.
The court jailed him for five years, refusing to show any leniency to him and saying that such crimes are on rise and need to be curbed with deterrent punishments.
"Nowadays, such crimes are being committed frequently and are required to be curbed. Therefore, deterrent punishment is called for.
"Considering the totality of facts and circumstances of the case, convict Rizaul is sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment under section 394 IPC along with a fine of Rs 3,000," the court said.
According to the prosecution, Rizaul and his accomplice Raju had stolen a stereo from a car after breaking its windowpane on December 17, 2009 morning in a North West Delhi locality, but were seen doing it by Kamal Kant, who asked them as to what were they doing.
At this, they pounced upon him and robbed him of his purse, containing Rs 305, at knife point.
