A local court today sentenced a man to six years in jail, holding him guilty in an abetment to suicide case.

District and Sessions Judge B S Sandhu also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Sukhwinder Singh, an employee of fire brigade department.

According to public prosecutor S S Randhawa, a woman had lodged an FIR against Sukhwinder accusing him of exploiting her daughter.

The complainant had alleged that Sukhwinder had maintained physical relations with her daughter on the pretext of marriage. However, she had later found that Sukhwinder was already married and had two children.

Shocked by this revelation, the complainant's daughter, who was a divorcee, allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on October 3, 2012.
