A court in Howrah district today sentenced a man to death for murdering four children, including three of his own, five years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge of Uluberia, Subhasis Ghosh, convicted Raish Qureshi for the murder of his two daughters and a son and the son of his sister-in-law and awarded capital punishment to him.

Qureshi, a 40-year-old butcher, suspected that the three children were not his and that was the reason of the murders, according to prosecution.

On November 14, 2011, when many family members had gathered on the occasion of a wedding, he took out his three children, on the pretext of a tour in the vicinity. His sister-in-law's son also came along with his own children.

He took them to Mahishrekha near Damodar river and threw the children in the river and fled to Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh.

Bodies of his daughers, Rounak (4), Alisha (2.5), and son Shahid (6) and his daughter-in-law's son Hassan (6) were found floating in the river the next day.

A few days later, Qureshi returned to the same spot where he had flung the children to the river and tried to commit suicide by consuming phenyl.

He was taken to hospital in an unconscious state where he was identified by his family members. Qureshi was arrested on November 21. The case was taken up by CID in 2012.
