Man gets death sentence for murdering college teacher

A man was today awarded death sentence by a court here for murdering a 24-year-old woman, who was a private college teacher two years ago at Karamadai on the outskirts of the city.

The prosecution case was that Mahesh (30), a construction worker hailing from Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district, followed Ramya when she was returning home on November 30, 2014.

He trespassed on Ramya's house and after hitting her and her mother with a wooden log, he raped Ramya who died sometime later. He had also decamped with some gold ornaments.

Mahesh was arrested in January and the case was going on in the Mahila Court, which convicted him yesterday and reserved the judgement for today.
 

He was awarded capital punishment for the murder, life sentence for rape, and six years imprisonment for trespassing on the house, besides a Rs 25,000 fine.
